Our research landscape is vibrant and ever-changing. Through the Presidential Grand Challenges
program, research teams level-up from promising research proposals to thriving official centers at UNM,
driving real-world and complex change. Through multidisciplinary collaboration, UNM research teams
work to improve the lives of New Mexicans—and beyond.
In 2025, the UNM Grand Challenges program introduced six new Level 1 teams:
Multilingualism Matters
Disaster Resilience
Perinatal Care
Increasing understanding of linguistic
diversity and development in bilingual
children, including those with language
delays, deaf children acquiring signed
languages and Indigenous children
acquiring their traditional languages.
Developing a multidisciplinary
community-based disaster resilience
training, recovery and capacitybuilding approach to mitigate disaster
compression throughout New Mexico.
Providing data and research to engage
equitable, safe and accessible perinatal
services for rural communities.
Engagement with rural communities will
be foundational to identifying solutions.
Trustworthy AI
Safer Streets
Gaining Time
Seeking to develop artificial
intelligence systems that
are provably and practically
trustworthy.
Investigating the rise in road
fatalities and the overall design of our
transportation systems to develop
targeted interventions in an effort to
improve public safety.
Working to improve predictions and
strategies for managing the outcomes of
environmental change on the biosphere.
