As the only R1 university in the state, The University of New Mexico stands at the forefront
of research excellence, driving innovation and discovery across diverse fields.
Because UNM plays a crucial role in the state's economy and culture by fostering
innovation through its vibrant research community, the Presidential Grand Challenges
program was established to address significant global, national and regional issues.
Through multidisciplinary collaboration on issues such as sustainable water resources,
substance use disorders and successful aging, UNM research teams work to improve the
lives of New Mexicans and beyond.
In 2023, UNM identified three new Grand Challenges:
